My father, Staff Sgt. Max Ventura, died on Sept. 01, 1962,
while stationed at Chicksands. Since I do not live in the United States
or England, it has been almost impossible for me to get any background information
on him (unit, etc.). I remember the partial names of a few friends, but
I have not been able to get in touch with them (Major Dan Gallup, Whitesox,
and "Scottie"). I know that he helped petition the new NCO club, but besides
that there is nothing else; we lived off-base in Dunstable so I have little
recollection of other persons, unit names, etc. I would appreciate it if
someone could help provide me with data on my father. Sincerely, Mitch Ventura

To Phil Parker (taug1): The 10th RSM was named a squadron
in the summer (aprx) of 1950,at Brooks Field, Texas and the first contingent
of personnel was deployed to England that Fall. The first troops arrived
in November from the States and from the 2nd RSM, Darmstadt, Germany. The
squadron operated as the 10th until 8 May, 1955, when it was inactivated,
per General Order 13, HQ, USAFSS, dtd 7 Mar 55. The 6951st RSM came into
being the same day, per General Order 14, Hq, USAFSS, dtd also the 7th of
March 55. I have copies of Personnel Action Memos from the 10th and 6951st
which transferred the members from one squadron to the other. I wrote in
this source back in November, but had to break off because my discourse
was getting too long. I ended it at the time I arrived at CHIX from the
2nd RSM on the 17th of Nov 50, and I plan to pick up there and continue
on to when I finished my last tour in July, 59. I haven't had much time
lately, but hope to continue as ASAP. TTFM (ta ta for now). To Brook Northern:

My Dad was at Chicksands 60-62 in the 6950 Security Group.
Ken Howard (Colorado) I stumbled upon the sight trying to learn more about
Bedford and Chicksands, as my parents haven't been back since and my brothers
and sister and I are planning to send them back next Spring/Summer. It's
a surprise, so don't know if they can make the reunion or not. We've been
trying to "inconspicuously" find out about some of the people my Dad knew
when he was there - I found 1!! Louis Burns - my Dad hasn't forgotten you
and I'm sure would love to catch up with you and Andy Anderson??? Their
40th Wedding anniversary is Dec 27th, with party Jan 2nd - they will know
about this sights, etc. at that point. If anyone else was at Chicksands
60-62 in the 6950 Security Group, and might remember/know by Dad, please
get in touch with me. Thanks and Happy Holidays to everyone! |

Air travellers to London from the northern U.S. might find
a lower cost flight from a Canadian city, such as Toronto or Montreal. For
example, roundtrip fares from Detroit Metro start at about $950. From Toronto,
the fares start at around US$750. Obviously, this option would be most attractive
to those who are relatively close to Canada (south from Detroit). |

I joined the ASA in July, 1947, went to school at Vint Hill
Farms Station. Iv was very hush-hush at that time, and we wore Signal Corps
brass, and could not mention the Agency or show our badges when off the
base. Finished Morse and undulator (inded tape) courses, and went to ASA
HQ, at Frankfurt, Germany in Feb, 1948, for processing and further assignment
to 6th Detachment, 2nd Sig. Svc. Battalion, ant Herzogenaurach, near Nurnburg.
Was in Army until the AF came into being, then I was transferred to it,
and, in April, 1949, I went to the 2nd RSM at Darmstadt. I visited Herzo
base several times later, and while I was at the 2nd RSM, the 6th Det. remained
a part of the ASA (I have seen mention in various places that the 6th Det
became part of the AFSS). The Army Intelligence School at Oberammergau (near
Garmisch) gave the 2nd RSM invitations to send four personnel to attend
their 6-month Russian course, and I, with three other ditty-boppers, went
there from Jan to July 1950. In September 1950, a detachment, consisting
of five EM and an officer, me being one of the enlisted, were sent Berlin
Templehof to form a detachment. I was a Staff Sgt. at the time. The officer
was 2nd Lt. Kenneth F. Pearsall, and there were two other S/Sgts named Virgil
C. Fordham, and Robert E. Draughon. Sgt. Norman R. Opitz and Cpl. Jack W.
Dukes were the other two. We operated from the 6th floor of the remains
of the bombed-out Templehof ops building, and had 2 SP-600 receivers, and
a rador scope on loan from the base. Nobody on the base, from the Base Commander
down, knew why we were there, the supposition being that we were COM security
people. Although the detachment was there on a permanent basis, for security
reasons, new orders were cut every 30 days. One of us usually did a trip
back to Darmstadt once a week to get pickup and send mail, etc. Before going
up to Berlin, I had learned that a new Sqdn was to be activated in England,
and I applied for it, since I had been during the war and loved it there.
Well, I was well settled in in Berlin and enjoying it, when order came up
that I was assigned to the new outfit in England, and I had to report back
to 2nd RSM to get ready. Well, on the 5th of Dec, 1950 I was one of about
80 or 90 people who left for Chicksands, and we arrived there early in the
month to open the base. We found a very cold place which had been a former
RAF intercept base, and had been closed down since the end of the war. (This
is evolving into such a long drawn out item that I will close now and continue
later to explain my participation in the story of Chicksands from the date
of my arrival in 1950 until my final departure in July, 1959.) |

Greetings all! I was at Chicksands from Apr 60 to Jan 63
on Able Flight and worked in "F" block as a "dittybopper". I stumbled on
to all of this in the summer. At that time there were a lot more e-mails
out there. Then my computer"crashed" and I lost the address I had for Chuck
Tomkins who's know living in Bedford (as I recall). I too am looking for
some guys who were there at the same time I was. I've located Bobby Drake
but there are nemerous others such as: Glen Barr, Larry Sewell, Larry Lamar
Lanning, Bill Middleton (Charlie Flight), "Gang" Harris, Gene ? (a French
name), Chuck Hoffman - to mention a few. If anyone knows of them or their
whereabouts, please send me their address(es), either e-mail or snail mail
or give them my e-mail address. Thanks. It would be great to hear from anyone
who was at Chicksands during the time I was there. I lived in the two-story
building just "below" the then Officers Club. I was in the last room on
the sec- ond floor, closest to the street - the window was always decorated
for the Christmas holidays. Jeff |

a somewhat emotional hour touring this site, did not know it existed. I
was a "dittybop" (don't remember the trick) and have memories of searching
on my Hammerlunds, asking for a better antenna, and typing on my Royal.
Boy, that was sure a long time ago! Would enjoy hearing from anyone there
who might have known me or who was there during that time. I still have
some photos of the base as it was then. Seems like I also remember the "Dirty

I am seeking anyone who might recall the 1956 UK championship
basketball game played at Upper Heyford between Kirknewton (65) and Chicksands

Towler(then 6950th group commander), the official timekeeper and myself.

HELP! I have been asked to re-create a "1950's Collection

We have a Collins R-390 and a Hammarlund SP-600 radio receivers. Are these
the correct sets? I also need information on the type of table they would
have been mounted on, and how they were racked? In addition, what sort of
typewriter was used and what was the chair like? Please Help! |

Hi, We just returned from a two week vacation in Bedfordshire.
It was fantastic as usual. Just wanted to tell all who return for the re-union
to be sure and go to the Pilgrims Progress Pub in Bedford for lunch. You
will not be disappointed. the cost is two lunches for 5 pound and you won't
go hungry. Course the bitter there is the best. When you leave the bus station,
turn left and go about 1 block. It is on the corner. Very nice place. Wed
and Sat is the market in Bedford. Nothing changes! Talk later. |

We have two children, Brandon - age 10 and Caitlin - age 7. They are enjoying

Unfortunately, it appears our computer disappeared during our recent move

costs and whether we can get the time off before we commit ourselves. Cheers,

This message is for those of you alumni who are as of yet
undecided about whether to attend the reunion or stay home. If you choose
not to attend, you will always wonder about who was there - how it looks
and how it feels to be back in the Chicksands neighborhood. Having revisited
once a few years ago - I can tell you the is a huge experience. There will
be folks attending that you know and many that you will get to know. I doubt
if there are too many shy folks amoung us. It is my prediction - that you
will take away many refreshed memories and many new ones too. Where will
you July 2000? Come join us. Becky |

October 3, 1999 Zan and I have been working hard to get your
registration information correctly published on the web page. Thanks for
your patience. If you notice that your information remains incorrect after
the next posting please email me ASAP. We want the information to be as
accruate as possible. Please contact the folks you know from Chicksands
and encourage them to register and if possible attend the reunion. If you
are know someone who is not yet registered - contact them and ask if they
are going - let them know you'd like to see them there. If you think someone
else may have already contacted them - do it yourself anywhat - don't let
anybody fall through the crack of not attending because they didn't know.
If you have any ideas about how we can encourage more alumni to attend please
make your suggestions known to Bill or me. We know there are many folks
that share our interest in participating in this reunion - there are those
who can't join us but there are still many who just haven't found out about
it and would come if they did. SO.....we need your help getting the reunion
word out and encouraging fellow "Chicksters" to attend. Thanks for your
help!! See you at the reunion! Becky Fahey |
