I was stationed at the 'Sands twice, from Jun 61
until Jul 64 and then again Aug 65 until Aug 66
when I was sent to Alconbury after getting married. I
spent the best years of my life at Chicksands. I
haven't forgotten the first day I arrived nor much
of the time I spent there. I worked in E block of
the compound on a straight mid schedule for the
first two years...of course had to wait forever for
my clearance to arrive so I worked in the dependent
school until it did come. I loved it there, the
fall football games, the "carnival" every summer
in the parking lot across from the 2-story dormitory,
the walks up and down Sandy Lane, the Wimpy Bar, Saracen's
Head, Peacock, Candelli's, skinny dipping in the River Ouse
(how could I?)...ahhhh memories. I often wanted to
return but, as is expected, so much would have changed.
40 years later I still work for the AF but civil
service. Have looked over the list of registrants
on this site and cannot recognize a single name. I
guess because my AFSC was 685X0, I didn't know many
291's or 292's. Did work with quite a few 202's though.
Names come back such as Gordon Banks, Ernie
Maldonado, Jerry Boggs, Frank Alton, Dave Walters,
and I imagine, with considerable effort, I could come up
with a few moe. Taxing or my old brain. I do
remember the Group Commander's name being Colonel
Bush and the 1st sergeant was a guy named McConnell.
Amazing the trivial things one keeps in the back
of their mind. Sorry I missed the reunion. I
would have loved going back to the Bedford area. |

My brother, PHILLIP C. NOLAND SSGT/20270 at the 6901st,Zweibrucken, Germany, (1962-1963-64) is deceased since 1986. Buried at National Cememtery, Bourne, Cape Cod, Massachusettes. I am doing research about my brother and what he did while in USAFSS, among other things. Had he lived his present age would be 70. I am 60. If you knew him or knew of him, or if he worked in conjunction with Chix, please kindly e-mail me at Idareedblanford@aol.com I have been researching for awhile and spoken to many who are retired, but so far, none who knew him. I also would like to have a dialogue with anyone who was a Radio Intercept Analyst, because I would like to be able to paint a picture of my brother, so to speak. Thank you for this site. It's grand.

This is the first time I have posted two messages on the same website in one day. But this is an important message, at least I think so.
Many of you are still posting messages and seeking information about Chicksands folks. It is really great that Zan continues to provide this site for us.
Please consider posting duplicate messages to the Chicksands Alumni & Friends web site at www.videoranch.net/chicksands.html. If you are not already signed up please do so and if you have signed up previously please double check your information to be sure it is correct - especially your email address.
We have already started considering several options for future reunions and will be trying to update the contact information of Chicksands Alumni & Friends. We don't want to loose touch with you - so when you post messages be sure to remember to also post with us at www.videoranch.net/chicksands.html.
Thanks a bunch. Happy Holidays and Cheers!

Comments I heard today that targeting the
World Trade Center was pretty dumb as there are/were many people from all over the world working in those buildings and that as a result, it's not just us who are up in arms against terrorism. Indeed, I just heard that a German Billionaire has pledged a 10 million dollar bounty on Osama Bin Laden.
I don't know about the rest of you, but I am full of all kinds of emotions, the strongest being the urge to punish someone for this.
I have heard reports of reprisals against Arab Americansk and I have to admit that I have been experiencing some reluctance in dealing with business run by Arab Americans. But, I just have to keep telling myself that taking my anger out in this way is just plain stupid.
I for one, have found it very difficult not to shed tears whenever I have watched thd evengts unfold on TV. And, its very hard for me to understand the attitude that would convince someone that something like this is justified.
I am very stirred up by all the flags I see flyhing today, I choke up when I see the displays of patriotism. I will be flying my flag as soon as I find a replacement for the mount on the side of my house. Regretfully, I have to admit that I have not flown the flag for a long time.
My prayers are with all those suffering and for us all. May God bless us all and God bless America ! |

I was at chicksands between Jan 00 and May 01. Clearly as
a British soldier. Long enough to hate it and love it at the same time.
If you have fond memories of the bowling alley, I have nothing but bad memories
of it, parading outside it at 0730 for monday morning kit inspection. Freezing
in the early chill, staring up at the trees with the birds flapping and
cawing made me leave the army. Every monday morning after spending the weekend
back home in London, marching up to the bowling alley "carpark" (because
thats all it is)from the theatre, I used to stare up at the trees thinking
why the hell am I here! Running the 1.5 mile circuit between the gym, around
the grass roundel in front of the priory, down the long drive past the chapel
over the bridge towards one of the gates (never knew the east, west in csands)
around the gate back towards the naafi, and up the hill towards the pay
block). Again...why! Lovely base, loved the foresty bit around it, and running
around that at the end of the week was great, but alot of what happened
there seemed unnecessary, and illogical. I remember my time at Chicksands
very fondly, especially the people I was there with. Sometimes when I am
at work in canary wharf I sit back and think of the times, but other times
I also think "what the hell". Like i said....love you and hate you. former

We have a working Collins R-390 in our museum at Chix. It
is rack-mounted along with a Hammarlund SP-600. The 'intercept operator'
is a mannequin wearing Vince Wuwert's fatigues and a red ball cap, denoting
Vince's 'B' Flight membership. The Wuwert figure wears headsets actually
used at Chix and donated by Frank Brandon (Chix 78-79) and is 'typing' copied
traffic on a Royal manual typewriter donated by 3-tour Chick Len Corcoran
(51-53; 67-70; 73-76). Standing behind the Wuwert figure is a second mannequin
attired in John Kelley's blues plus headsets acquired and donated by Larry
Tart (Chix 56-60). Watch the photo gallery on our OFFICIAL web site for
pictures of this museum display. Coming very soon. (www.videoranch.net). |

THE FELLOW IN FRONT OF ME SAID, "GEE, THEY HAVE AN R390 RADIO IN HERE. I
LOOKED AND SURE ENOUGH, THERE IT WAS, STILL IN WORKING ORDER BY THE WAY.
I ASKED HIM HOW HE KNEW THAT RADIO AND HE INFORMED ME THAT HE WAS AN X1
STATIONED WITH USAFSS IN THE PHILLIPINES AND ALSO WITH THE 6981ST SEC. SQ.

For Karl Lutes. I don't know what Trick you were on, but
I know that on Dawg Trick during those years, except for "new ops Center"
203s worked out of D Block. Delta Block was nicknamed "Dolly" by dittybop

Hi to all the Ground Rats in the 6950ESG, especially those

Sheila Awe (Broz) where are you, you dawg!? Anyone know where Michelle Buono,
"RIP" and Ed Tacke are? Bob Devine is in Silver Spring, MD. I'm in Ellicott
City,MD finally left England last year - both being Beltway Bandits now.
Pam Guillory is Pam Bethany and has a beautiful little girl. Al Baker was

are well and if anyone knows the whereabouts of any member of the Chicksands

You guys brought so many memories back and even though they
aren't relevant to which direction you faced it made me think back to those
days in ?? Block. I was a voice intercept operator and I remember walking
past a room full of morse operators to get to our little room in the back.
There were only a few of us per shift. Several operators who were supposed
to "hand copy" what they heard, and several transcribers who listened to
the same signals and actually typed what they heard. The constant sound
in our room were feet stepping on and off the foot pedals and reels of tape
spinning back and forth. And occasional outburst of an airman who had had
enough GUHOR for one night! This was 1961-1964 and I don't remember which
block we shared with you guys before the move "up the hill". I certainly
do remember wandering over to the snack bar during mids doing anything in
those days before I became a caffeine freak, doing anything to stay awake.

To Dave Moore: Dave you may be right about that for the time
period you refer. My memory is not as clear from that period of my tenure
there. I have a memory of facing my receivers in the block that I occupied,
but that might have been on my second tour there from 61 through the time
we moved to the new Ops Center with FLR9. I'll bow to your superior memory
of that period. Perhaps those who designed the tableau were of the period
of 50 to 60. I have no memory left of sitting sideways to my receivers.
Ah, how the years leave cobwebs. Thanks for the heads-up on positions. |

To Frank Budelman: congrats on your recent visit, I haven't
made the trip as yet. Regarding seating position. In the 3 blocks I pulled
shifts in during my time there from 57 to 60, the racks were either to the
left or right of the tables, depending on which side of the room your position
was on. All the tables faced the front door. I remember quite well resting
the fingers of my hand in the dial of my Hammerlunds, while spinning the
knob with my thumb, most of the time with my left hand as my regular position
was on the left side of the block. |

In case my e-mail did not make it to Brig. Holtom, I hope
he sees this here. To: Brig. Chris Holtom Thank you so much for arranging
a visit to my old home, Chicksands. Even though the Base has changed in
many modern ways in the years since I was there, it still was that peaceful,
warm, inviting place, I lived for 6 of my formative years. WO1 Andy Briddon
was a most gracious and informative host and my family and I would like
to acknowledge him for that. The two Sergeants in the Guard Post demonstrated
exceptional military bearing and were extremely helpful. My compliments
to your Command. Even though Chicksands looked more like a WWII base when
I was there in 1958-1959 and again from 1961 - 1965, it still retained some
of that look when I visited on June 21, 2001. England in the 50s and 60s
was an entirely new experience for a young man who had never been abroad
before. It was an experience I will never forget. Ann Sokolowski gave us
a most gracious tour of the Priory and I learned more about its history
than when I was living on the base for almost 6 years. The fellow (I did
not get his name) did a marvelous tour of the Museum for all of us. Please
relay my compliments. I have one comment on the Radio Operator tableau:
We sat facing the radios instead of having them on our left side. Just a
note for historical accuracy, not a criticism. Wish Andy the best on his
retirement from military service and I hope he has a wonderful life in his
hometown of Bath. Once again, thanks, your invitation made my millenium.

RE: The Klingman Message: I have contacted Prof. Klingman,
and he has assured me that the message on our board is bogus. He admits
to sending the original message to a friend, who added his name as the originator.
Attached is the full text of his reply to me concerning this matter: Dear
Mr. Henninger, First, my apologies for the misinformation. The hoax e-mail
which you received did not originate with me, and in no way involves my
university. After receiving it myself in early Spring of last year, I sent
it to one of my friends. The e-mail software was set to auto-signature,
and it appended my signature block. My intent was not to have the e-mail
forwarded as is stated in that document, but I didn't make that clear to
my friend. He then forwarded the letter to an extensive address book without
removing my name. I'm sure the fact of the name and contact information
make the letter look completely valid to most people, and now the letter
(with my name) is in wide circulation. Although I was in the military during
the Vietnam years, I did not serve in combat, nor was I in Southeast Asia
during the conflict. Many friends and acquaintances of mine did serve, and
a couple didn't return. I would in no way want to diminish their contribution
by making false claims. Writer David Emery has researched this hoax quite
thoroughly. Dates are incorrect in a couple of instances. One thing is true;
Jane Fonda did visit Hanoi and the POW camp in 1972, and she made accusatory
statements against the U.S. government and military personnel that caused
servicemen and their families a great deal of anguish. The stories about
the slips of paper, the subsequent torture and beatings are not true, and
since I have communicated personally with Col. (Ret.) Larry Carrigan, I
have discovered that he never even saw Jane Fonda during her visit. The
content of the letter is debunked in the website below. This was sent to
me by a respondent who read the Fonda e-mail with my signature. I only wish
I'd seen this before I sent the letter to my friend. It was my willingness
to believe the worst of Jane Fonda that caused me to send it to him. http://urbanlegends.about.com/science/urbanlegends/library/weekly/aa110399.htm
-- then search "Fonda" as a keyword for the link to the e-mail. This account
is by David Emery. Jane Fonda, along with 99 other "Most Important Women
of the Century" was honored by Barbara Walters in April 1999, and subsequently
by Ladies Home Journal magazine. (See following website) http://www.moorej.org/jane/
In the brief biographies of the women, their contributions were summarized.
Fonda's anti-war activism is mentioned, but her film career and her success
as a workout "guru" in her several videos were the major credits in Ms.
Fonda's bio. Again, I'm sorry for the inadvertent "spamming" I've caused.
I'd appreciate your sending back this information to the person from whom
you received it, and I thank you in advance. Sincerely, Charles Klingman

Sun Jun 3 22:25:55 2001 |
Note below another new email address. After 10 years in Alabama
I’ve been moved to a new job in an old city. Back to Louisville, the
city of my Air Force induction 30 years ago. I don’t think I will
be here that long but the recent packing/unpacking unearthed my long forgotten
Air Force personnel records file. Inside I found a welcome to Chicksands
letter from an A1C Robert Randolph dated December 8, 1971. At that time
I was about two weeks from leaving Goodfellow. Robert had been at Chicksands
for a few months and was designated as my sponsor. “Welcome to the
Showcase of the USAFSS in Europe, RAF Chicksands. I have been chosen to
be your sponsor for your stay here and will try to acquaint you with the
base, its activities and the surrounding area. A little about the work and
then I’ll go into the base itself. You will be working shift work,
four swings, one day break, four mids, four days, and then the best part
of the cycle three days of break. After the third cycle, you will fall into
the routine; then you will only know what day of the cycle it is. The three
days of break gives you ample time to travel around the country or just
catch up on your sleep. The base is small, even smaller than Goodbuddy.
We are located about 45 miles from London, which is about an hour and a
half by car or one hour by train. The base is quite pretty; hence the name:
“Showcase of Europe”. We have a BX that is quite small and not
very good, but there are three fantastic BX’s located at Mildenhall,
Lakenheath, and South Ruislip that you can easily get to. If you think the
BX at Goodfellow is bad, wait till you get here. There is an eight lane
bowling alley on base which is always in use. They have all kinds of leagues
and if you are a bowler then you have it made. The athletic program is quite
good. There is an intramural and varsity program here. Each flight usually
participates in the intramural league. The base varsity teams compete with
other base teams in the UK and the rest of Europe; so, if you are a jock
then you will really enjoy the sport program. There is a theater on base
but the shows are far from recent. I got here in August and I am still seeing
the shows that were shown at Goodfellow in February and March. The theaters
or cinemas, as the Blokes call them, in the English communities are quite
good. There is an Airman’s Club that costs a buck a month to belong
to. I know it is better that the one at Goodfellow. They have a wide range
of entertainment ranging from dancing, floor shows to strip shows. It is
a good place to meet the British girls. I have never seen so many girls
and do they have nice legs; but watch out because they will soak you for
drinks. The barrack life isn’t too bad and then again, it isn’t
too good. You will be living two to a room which is great as it beats open
bay living which I had at Goodfellow. Presently, some of the barracks are
being fixed up and shouldn’t be too bad once everything is done. Just
recently they started cleaning details which everybody hates. You will find
out more about that once you get here. The base is really hipped up on haircuts,
shoe shines, and saluting officers in your civies. You will be pulling details
up at work, in the squadron area and in the barracks. So you can see the
situation. That’s about all I can tell you about the base. Like I
said, there isn’t much I can tell you that would not sound like a
put on. Lets face it the life at Chicksands isn’t going to be all
that great; no matter what they told you at your briefing. Keep a smile
on your face.” I don’t recall ever meeting Robert Randolph once
I reached Chicksands; but I remember how much his letter deflated my expectations
(a good thing). The day-to-day life of a first-termer assigned to the operations
area turned out to be far from ideal but it beat the hell out of field stripping
a M16 or trying to get some sleep by counting RPG detonations instead of
sheep. |

As most of you probably know, The London bridge was dismantled
and shipped to the US in the early 70's (1970 I believe)and reconstucted
at Lake Havasu City AZ. I have driven through that area many times since
the 70's but never took the time to make the 19 mile journey off I40 to
visit the bridge. Last week, returning home to CA after a vacation, my wife
and I made the trip to the bridge. Talk about Deja vu! We walked over and
under the bridge, getting some photos and thoroughly enjoying a very picturesque
site. One of these days I will scan in a photo of a 63 year old "Crazy Dave"
standing next to one of the original bronze plaques at the entranceways
to the bridge. Wish I had a photo of a younger me by one of those plaques! |

Dear Sir/Madam I am not sure this is the correct website
for Chicksands or that the museum at Chicksands is open to the general public,
but if it is please read on. The governors and staff of the Firs Lower School
in Ampthill are holding a history day on Saturday 16th June. One of the
events we have planned is a code breaking station, giving the children a
chance to try and decode messages using a variety of techniques. This is
very much a 'hands on' event where the children aim to disarm a ticking
bomb. At the top of the bomb are four coloured wires, disconnect them in
the correct order and the bomb is disarmed. Disconnect them in the wrong
order and we lose the school. Well actually a buzzer sounds, but it is as
realistic as I was allowed. To find the correct order the children have
to decipher a number of messages using three different coding methods. The
reason for contacting you is that we hope children and their parents will
want to learn more about history and in particular will be interested in
visiting places of local interest, such as Chicksands. If you have any leaflets
or posters we will be happy to have them on or nearby our code breaking
station and hopefully it will spark further interest. Many thanks for your
help Dr I.C.Mayes Chair of Governors Firs Lower School Ampthill |

blow smoke to see which way it went or, Toss some loose grass in the air

ago for the Y2K reunion, I still have very enthusiastic memories of the
dear place and will definetly go back to England. I have learned that some
of my relatives came from England and I want to go back and perhaps, find
my "ROOTS" . Hope all who read this are well. And I not only thank you for
your service to our country but salute you as you continue your lives in
peace. God Bless America and may the relationship that our nation has with
Great Britain continue to flourish in defense of freedom loving people.

Excellent site, my hat is off to Brig. Gen Holtem for corresponding

guys and remember such great (and painful times). I used to coordinate the
combat training exercises on base and was hoping to find a few friends.
Any out there? Take care. Eric Combs, SMSgt, USAF, Retired |

seen this show. At any rate, it is well worth the time watching. The video
can be purchased from PBS. Go to www.pbs.org/wgbh.shop. Click on Nova videos,
then click on Home videos by title. Look for "Decoding Nazi Secrets". Great
show, filled in a lot of stuff that happened before my time at the Sands. |

I knew most of the people that were stationed there. I recognize so many

I read an interesting missive from Ambrose Jackson about
"Rosetta" and it reminded me of the time in 1963 on November 17th when Jack
Ducharme, Jimmie Walraven, Jim Penik, and Ron Payne were playing poker in
our barracks #431 and thinking about staying up until Midnight and walking
to the "Bridge" to experience "Rosetta's" return when at about 11:45 the
west door to our barracks opened and a breeze swept through as the east
door opened and closed. Spooookey! We were sure that Rosetta took a deviation
through our barracks on her circuitous route to rendezvous with her monk
on the bridge. We never made it to the bridge that night. I spent 6 years
at Chix from 1958 to 1965 as a dittybop. Played Base Soccer, Base Football
and Dawg trick softball, and acted in the 'Sands Players theatre group.
Great memories, but don't see many of the guys I knew on this venue. |

Jane Fonda: One of the "100 Women of the Century Americans
who proudly served during the Vietnam Era can ever forget Jane Fonda's treason
and complicity in the murders of American POWs. Nevertheless, she is being
honoured as one of the "100 Women of the Century." Unfortunately many have
forgotten and still countless others have never known how Ms Fonda betrayed
specific Americans who served and sacrificed during Vietnam. Part of my
conviction comes from personal exposure to those who suffered her attentions.
The first part of this is from an F-4E pilot, Jerry Driscoll, a River Rat.
In 1978, the former Commandant of the USAF Survival School was a POW in
Ho Lo Prison-the "Hanoi Hilton." Dragged from a stinking cesspit of a cell,
cleaned, fed, and dressed in clean PJs, he was ordered to describe for a
visiting American "Peace Activist" the "lenient and humane treatment" he'd
received. He spat at Ms Fonda, was clubbed, and dragged away for further
punishment. During the subsequent beating, he fell forward upon the camp
commandant's feet and caused one of his shoes to come off. This sent that
officer into a frenzied rage as he joined the beating. In 1978, the Col.
Driscoll still suffered from double vision (which permanently ended his
flying days) from the Vietnamese Col.'s frenzied application of a wooden
club. Col. Larry Carrigan spent 6 years in the "Hanoi Hilton," the first
three of which he was listed as "missing in action." His wife lived on faith
that he was still alive. His group, too, got the cleaned/fed/clothed routine
in preparation for a peace delegation" visit. The POWs had devised a plan
to get word out that they were still alive. .Each man secreted a tiny piece
of paper, with his SSN on it, in the palm of his hand. When lined up before
Ms Fonda and a cameraman, she walked the line, shaking each man's hand and
asking little barbs like: "Aren't you sorry you bombed babies?" and "Are
you grateful for the humane treatment from your benevolent captors? Believing
this HAD to be an act, they each palmed her their sliver of paper. She took
them all without missing a beat. At the end of the line and once the camera
stopped rolling, to the shocked disbelief of the POWs, she turned to the
North Vietnamese officer in charge ... and handed him the little pile of
papers. All the men were savagely beaten, including Larry Carrigan. Three
men were beaten to death and Larry Carrigan was almost number four but recovered.
His survival is the only reason we know about Jane's traitorous actions
that day. I was a civilian economic development advisor in Vietnam and was
seized by the North Vietnamese communists in South Vietnam in 1968 and held
for over 5 years. I spent 27 months in solitary confinement, one year in
a cage in Cambodia, and one year in a "black box" in Hanoi. My North Vietnamese
captors deliberately poisoned and murdered a female missionary, a nurse
in a leprosarium in Ban me Thuot, South Vietnam, whom I buried in the jungle
near the Cambodian border. At one time, I weighed approximately 90 lbs.
(My normal weight is 170 lbs.) We were Jane Fonda's "war criminals." When
Jane Fonda was in Hanoi, I was asked by the camp communist political officer
if I would be willing to meet with Jane Fonda. I said yes, for the chance
to tell her about the real treatment we POWs were receiving, which was far
different from the treatment purported by the North Vietnamese, and parroted
by Jane Fonda, as humane and lenient. Because of this, I spent three days
on a rocky floor on my knees with outstretched arms with a large amount
of steel placed on my hands, and beaten with a bamboo cane till my arms
dripped blood. When I had the opportunity to meet Jane Fonda after I was
repatriated, I asked if she would debate me on TV but she refused to answer.
Her disgraceful behaviour does not exemplify someone who should be honoured
as part of "100 Years of Women." "100 years of great women" should never
include a traitor whose hands are covered with the blood of so many patriots.
There are few things I have strong visceral reactions to, but Hanoi Jane's
participation in blatant treason, is one of them and many US veterans believe
she shouldn't be out of Federal prison yet. Please take the time to forward
this to as many people as you possibly can. Maybe it will eventually end
up on her computer and the computers of people close to her. She needs to
understand that we can never forget. Charles (Skip) Klingman Asst. Professor
of Music Southwestern Oklahoma State University Weatherford, OK 73096(580)

Have any of the participants in this activity served in Japan
at a small base named Shiroi? It was about 20 to 40 minutes by train from
Tokyo and was the home of the 6920th Security Wing until that organization
went to Hawaii in summer/fall 1959. Some personnel went to Hawaii, some
went with the 6902(?)RGM to Kadena, Okinawa. It depended on how much time
the person had left to serve. I was stationed at Shiroi, APO 73, from August
1957 until about July 1959, and then went to Kadena. I really enjoyed that
time in Japan. Have been back once, 42 years later (1999) and plan to go
back next year, 2002. |

gotten into the world of computers so had no knowledge of this web site
, reunion or any of the other happenings since I left. I was a 202 type
and worked for a Lt(later Capt.) Duclo (may have spelling wrong) up behind
the wire. One of my last memories was Col. Harry Towler whispering in my
ear that I would change my old "tank" style cap for the new regulation job.I
left a S/Sgt. Some of the names that I still recall are Roger(Barf) Martin,

Hello to all. I have just revisited the Classmates.com website
and looked at the RAF Chicksands roster - there are 395 alumni listed. These
alumni served between 1945 and 2001. If you are searching for old friends
of your Chicksands days I would highly recommend registering yourself and
searching for your pals at that site! Good luck! I will be in the UK in
May 2001 - hoping for good weather (yeah right) and another visit to Chicksands
- but without all the fanfare of the Millenium Reunion. Cheers, Becky, Chicksands

Hello again, and Happy New Year to all my fellow Chixters.
It's been a while since I've written, but, there have so many new letters
that have somehow triggered so many fond memories, I just felt the need
to say "Hi" again and let you know how good it feels that the Chicksands
we all knew and love so much is stll very much alive in our hearts and memories.
I spent three of the best years of my life there from 1969-1971. Just a
dumb kid from Arkansas working in the torn-tape relay (DAWG) shift and living
in(DAWG) Dorm. a "DAWG'S life was never better. I did alot of growing up
while there...could't have picked a better place. Met some beautiful English
ladies, and almost married one, but, alas, fate is most unpredictable. I
live in Omaha now; I'm an Air Force Webmaster at Offutt AFB. I really wanted
to make the reunion but was unable to due to scheduling. I did, however,
receive a tape from Larry Tart, and, my oh my, what a handsome bunch did
attend! I saw a few familiar faces; even tho it's been 30 years. I know
you all had a blast at the Chicks.....good for you! I was there with you
in spirit. A word of thanks to Mike Copperwheat for giving me a lead on
an old friend and co-worker, Nick Swindell. Thanks Mike. I havn't found
him yet; but, I will. So long for now, fellow Chixters. I visit Chicksands
in my dreams most often. Perhaps I'll see you there. John McGill, SMSgt,

I have been reading this website since 1999 but never had
my own computer until now. Since I do I just wanted to say that I enjoy
reading it amazes me the number of personnel who have been stationed at
the 'sands. I was with the 6950th on Dawg Flight from 1970-1972 as an x-2.
I was single and living in able dorm. I loved the base but never really
appreciated it until I was gone. Some of the guys who I worke

recall at this time. After being discharged from the AF I worked for a short

This is for Susan, sharlan@ctaz.com. This is what I know
of the Rosetta (or Rosatta) legend: I arrived at Chicksands in Dec. 1950
and was one of the original members of the 10th RSM, as well as the first
RT operator there. There were two kinds of barracks at the time, a few rectangular
asbestos-sided structures, calle "Seco" huts, and a lot of Quonset huts,
called "Nissan" huts by the RAF.As an NCO, I lived in one of the "luxery"
barracks, a Seco, which had what the Quonset huts did not have, a toilet
bowl in a small cubby hole about three feet square. All the huts were heated,
if you can call it that, by two coke-fed stoves, the coke being supplied
by some of the few RAF fellows stationed on the base. (They were housed
in a small area down near the Shefford gate.) In our area was an enclosure
in which the coke was stored, and one a GI was detailed every night to do
fire duty, which consisted of touring the barrack area all night and keep
the fires going in the barracks. We became quite good friends with several
of the RAF guys, and they used to tell us very interesting little stories
about Chicksands, which brings me to the point of this corresponence. To
begin, Rosetta, the name by which I first knew her, was, as everyone knows,
a nun of the Gilbertine Order at the Priory. The monk, whose name I don't
know, was also there. The two sexes were forbidden to ever communicate with
each other. The Church, now long gone, had a high wall built down the middle,
and at Masses, the nuns would be on one side and the monks on the other.
Somehow, Rosetta and her monk conncected with very unfortunate results.
Their secret was found out when Rosetta became pregnant, and she was sealed
alive in the wall. For his punishment, the monk was beheaded. Now, it is
said that Rosetta walks at certain times on the road leading down from the
Priory to the Flit River bridge, but there are, according to the RAF boys
who told us, a little conflict here; one story says that Rosetta walks on
the 17th of November, which is supposedly the anniversary date of when she
was sealed in the wall, and the 17th of every month. I prefer the first
version as being the most likely date. There you have it to the best of
my knowledge. I served three tours at dear old Chicksands and would still
be there if they had just forgotten I was there. I first arrived, as stated,
in December, 1950, and last departed in July, 1959. Those were happy years.
I met my wife, who was a nurse at the London Chest Hospital in Arlesey,
and we have been married going on 48 years and have had only one fight.
It started the days we were married, and is still going on. (My joke) So,
Susan, I hope my story satisfies your question. Regards, Ambrose (Jack)
Jackson. |

CHICKSANDS HISTORY - WIRELESS RADIO'S 100th ANNIVERSARY A
hundred years ago, 23rd January, Italian-born radio pioneer Guglielmo Marconi
sent the first ever long-distance wireless transmission from the Isle of
Wight to Cornwall on the British mainland. In 1894, Marconi had begun experimenting
in the use of radio waves to send messages, progressively increasing the
distance over which a message could be transmitted: across a room, down
a corridor, the length of a field. In 1896, due to a lack of interest in
Italy, he took his radio equipment to England, where he was granted the
world's first-ever patent for a system of telegraphy. The transmission of
January 23, 1901, however, from Niton on the Isle of Wight to Bass Point
in Cornwall, more than doubled his previous record, proving once and for
all that distance was no barrier to the sending of radio messages. It also
proved that radio waves could be transmitted across the horizon, something
the majority of the scientific establishment had insisted was impossible
Not only was it the furthest wireless transmission ever made -- 186 miles
(299 kilometres) -- but it also proved that radio waves could be transmitted
across the horizon, something the majority of the scientific establishment
had insisted was impossible. Before then scientists thought radio waves
only travelled in straight lines and therefore couldn't cross the horizon.
Marconi proved them wrong and the rest is history, including British and
US radio signals collection from Chicksands, beginning in 1940, which also
targeted Italian military communications during WW II. |
