Great site Zan! Very nice to have a place to drop a line and remember some great times. Special Hello to Vic the Dik, Moira, Rum-Dum (Chris you dog!), Eddie and Jill, and the rest of the zoo crew. Thankfully all the pub crawl video tapes are packed away from the wife, but the Firkin pub coasters are proudly framed on the wall! |

I just received my copy of the VideoRanch The Way we Were Chicksands production yesterday and couldn't wait to view it. The video is really something very wonderful and now a very special piece of my memory and collection of things I have from Chicksands days. Sam & Liz Braswell have come through for us alumni and captured the specialness and beauty of Chicksands in this presentation.
We'll be in Shefford on December 18 and Scotland for Christmas. Happy Holidays and Hogmonay!

I lived at Chicksands around 1992-1993 and worked at the NCO Club and at the Rod and Gun club as a bartender before I left. I hung around with Paula and still continue to be in contact with her. I met so many great people while living there, unfortunately, I do not remember last names so it may be hard to find anyone out there. I will try to list some names from people that hungout at the R&G and see if anyone remembers me or Paula and replies:
Steve - divorced, with two boys
Andy (good friends with Brit below)
The British Gentleman
Bob (from New Jersey?)
Vern
Alicia (also a bartender)
Chuck (the manager)
Mary (young, funny, black woman, talked alot)
Derek (fireman)
Chuck (we kept in touch for a while after I returned home)
This is just a quick list - I know there are a ton of other people I would love to hear from!

I was stationed at Chicksands from March 1974-March 1977 in the Security Police Squadron, primarily assigned to Charlie Flight on the hill. Dear Site Visitor,
I have just added a new page of very rare pictures to the RAF Greenham Common site under the title of "Looking Back at The SAC Years". The 31 pictures on the page date from 1951-1964 when the base was under use of the Strategic Air Command and feature various aircraft at the base through those years: B-47s, KC-97s, B-36, B-45, C-47 and others.
I have also been sent some remarkable aerial pictures of the base in the 1950s as well as some of aircraft ground control equipment at Greenham. If you have any pictures of you may be able to contribute also, please let me know.
The new page can be found from the homepage:
http://www.megspace.com/politics/greenham/index.htm
My thanks for your support of the site. Please let others know.
Yours sincerely,

ATTENTION US AIR FORCE KIRKNEWTON VETERANS
My name is Anne Scott and I am searching for my father who served with the USAFSS, 6952nd RSM at RAF Kirknewton between the time span of 1953-1955/6. I do not have a surname but his Christian name was Robert aka Bob. My mother's name was Catherine McIntosh, known as Rina or Cathy and she was twenty when she met my father. He would have met my mother in early 1953 as I was born on January 14th 1954, and I know he was around until I was 12/18 months old. My mother lived with her grandmother Violet, above a public house called 'The Worlds End', in the High Street Edinburgh which is part of 'The Royal Mile'. I have no evidence to say what rank, position he held, all I know is what my mother told me, that he was in the American Air Force. My mother passed away just over eight years ago without providing me with any more information, therefore I am turning to the 'Information Highway' in the hope that someone, somewhere might remember who he was and be able to point me in the right direction. If you have information, contact Anne Scott, ragtime@blueyonder.co.uk. Feel free to forward this request to others who might have information that you do not. Thank you sincerely for your help.

I have obtained the History Channel Time Team schedule through the month of October. So far it does not include the Chicksands program but I sent another request to the History Channel today. I am hopeful that they will add the show as soon as possible. If you would like a copy of the October schedule please email me and I will send you a copy. The programs are interesting and informative so I encourage you to view them if you are able to do so.
I did notice that the Eastern time slot has changed from 8 to 7 am - so please check your local programming to be sure.
I apologize if you find these updates or similar ones to be intrusive. I am never really positive about how useful some of my tidbits are to those of you who use the message board. So thanks for your patience - I would just hate not to post a message and someone miss out on getting the information.

Good Sunday Morning,
I was surprised and thrilled to see that the new History Channel fall program schedule includes the Time Team show. I believe this week's program on Papcastle, Cumbria may be the first in the new series followed by next week's program on Lanceston, Cornwall. The History Channel only publishes a four week schedule so all programs to be aired are not listed yet - please check the History Channel website for additional updates.
You may recall that the Time Team conducted the "dig" at Chicksands in May 01 and featured the Priory site & grounds in its January 02 UK show. By all accounts, the Chicksands show was very well done and interesting.
At this time I do not know if the Chicksands program will be part of the Time Team series on the History Channel - but I have written to HC and requested that it be included. In my message to HC I suggested that other USAF veterans, along with their friends & family members would really support HC airing the Chicksands program. Please feel free to send your own message to HC if you wish to see the Chicksands program on the History Channel.
To access the History Channel electronically, I did a search on the internet found the webpage and way down at the bottom of the History Channel home page I found a Feedback link. I have not had a reply but hope to hear from them this week.
I will post additional pertinent information on the program listings when I have the updates. But, I didn't want you to miss this week's program if it has not yet aired on local cable History Channel station.
Cheers
Becky

Help - I am organizing a reunion for the original Chicksands FLR-9 Operations Team. I have located and contacted all remaining members except BOB GAUL. I believe he lives on Colin Road, Luton, Beds. If there is anyone out there who can/will contact him for me, I would greatly appreciate it. Please ask him to e-mail me at waynew511@aol.com regarding the upcoming reunion. Tks |

I wonder if there is anybody that reads this that was in TROOP 291 Boy Scouts of America, and remember the annual OPERATION SNOWSHINMES with 1st Bramhall Scout and Air Scouts, and the 3rd Hazel Grove Scouts.
I am in otuch with Ed Remington, but it would be great to hear from any other Leaders or lads that were on the Camps or at the Summer Camp in 1966 in the English Lake District.

For Bill Chapman: No, it was neither of the Lts who did the lettering work on the tail fins, tho at least on, and probably both, were involved in the project. I remember both of them. The were active fighter pilots and they occasionally went over to Bentwaters (or Crooked Creek, as we knew it), the location of a USAF fighter base, to keep up their flying time. They got into trouble once when they did a little low flying over some farms and were reported. Also, one of them owned a Triumph TR-2, I think it was, and the other had a motorcycle. They were in bad with the Colonel, and, as I heard it, the one guy was not allowed to ride his cycle. Anyway, the guy who did the paint work on the missile may come forth someday and fess up to the world, as he did to some of us during the Reunion. Loved it!! Ambrose |

Thank you Ambrose for verifying me...smile/ We lived in the quonset huts (by the chow hall) nearest the the field in front of HQ's. Woke up that morning (sunny even!!) with that great red and white missile nose down in the middle. Cyrillic (?) lettering just perfect! And perfectly squared in red and white!
Was told it was created by two (ex-fighter Jock flight commanders) one 1st Lt and one 2nd Lt. Both pissed because of their assignment. Never knew for sure but did know they left the camp immediately thereafter!!!

Re Bill Chapman's note of Aug 20: I well remember the infamous missile event. I came to work that morning through the Shefford gate. Just after crossing the bridge and started up the hill, I couldn't help but see the "missile" sticking out of the gound out in the middle of the field. I found out about most of the culprits responsible for the dastardly act, but didn't learn until the Chix Reunion in year 2000 who had done the very expert lettering on the tail fin. I won't mention his name, but while talking with him, the subject of the missile came up, and he finally said that he was the one, rather proudly, I think. I had always thought it was one of the Lts who did it. About a month later, I happened to be in the Air Police office for something about my car registration, and I saw the missile lying over by one wall of the room. I asked the desk sergeant whether anymore had been found out about the "criminals" and he said no, but they were in deep stuff if they were caught. Regards, Ambrose (Jack) |

(55-59)Re:Ambrose Jackson's Comments. Loved the return to yesteryear Ambrose. As close as I got to the shoot out at G Block was to come in on Mids that night and gossip and second guess. As I recall, the SP that shot the doer in the butt was fined $5.00 and given a carton of cigarettes to protect him from any double jeapordy trials (?) One event I have never heard about since then was the "Russian Missile" that appeared nose buried in the middle of the playing field one morning. Apparently the prank of two fun loving Flight Commanders (2nd Lt's) Since I haven't heard it mentioned since... I'm beginning to think it might have one of my too many beer nights.Anyone else recall this?
By the way Ambrose, I was there in the softer years when we had oil to fire up those quonset hut stoves... Winter had'm glowing cherry red half way up the stack...

Just making a visit to say hello to all you ex-Chixers. I would like to see a note occasionally from some of you old guys who were at the Sands during the '50s. I served three tours there (from Dec '50 to July '59), but seldom see anything from anyone from that period. I was in the first group from Germany in Dec '50 and I set up the first R/T position (one SP-600, one MC-88 typewriter and a lot of 5-ply paper, and no tape recorder. I had a guy by the name of Don Kubeck working with me. He was trained as a Polish linguist, and he did the transcribing for me as I did the intercept part. Don soon got the hang of copying Russian, and became a very good operator.
I remember once, when the 24th Air Army was on maneuvers in East Germany. I copied 70 pages as fast as I could write (using a type of shorthand symbols which I had learned when I was at 2nd Radio Sqdn, and which was developed, I believe, by Virgil Fordham at Darmstadt). We wrote a short curved symbol indicating turns, speed increases, dives, climbs, etc. Made it possible to copy more than one could otherwise do in a given time.
Chicksands was quite a place in the early '50s.
We lived in the quonset huts (the rounded ones, and also there were a few rectangular barrack which were called "Seco huts". One large building served as washroom, shower room, and latrine for all the barracks. The roof was corregated time, meaning that the ends of the building had large openings at each end which let in all the cold air (Dec '50 and Jan-Mar '51 were plenty cold and snowy. The barracks were heated by a coke-fired stove in each end, but if you got more than 10 feet away from the stove you froze off your whatchamaycallit. We did have a very generous coke supply furnished by the RAF cadre, and they used to like the coke detail bacause they could come into our barracks for a chat and warmup, and maybe get a drink of Scotch. We got to know several of them very well, and they were a great bunch of guys. Their commander was an RAF Flight Lt. named Lou Barry, and I got to know him very well. He invited me once down to the Priory and he took me on my first sightseeing tour of the old building. Quite a treat!
During my tours at Chicksands, I was there when the tree fell across the Comm Center on night, killing one man, and putting the Center out of commission for awhile. I was on duty as SDNCO the night a guy in the Comm Center went berserk,
after a drinking spree in Bedford that afternoon,
and shot up the place. Noone was hurt except the culprit, who was shot in the buttock by an AP in the effort to subdue him. It worked.
I don't know how I managed to get some of the duties I had in such opportune moments, but I also was the Burn NCO on duty the day the burn bag blew away during a high wind and carried classified material over half of Bedfordshire. Every day before burn bags were delivered to the incinerator, the NCO in charge had to phone a certain officer in Group Operations to get final approval to burn. On the fateful day, the weather had been very windy and gusty, and I phoned the officer and told him about the bad winds, but he ordered me to go ahead with the burn. I had the phone operator, as always, to inform each block in the Tech Site to deliver the bags to the incinerator, and some of them were detailed to handle the burn procedure. On this day, one of the men from a block lost his bag to a sudden gust of wind, and it literally exploded, blowing trash all over the place. Operations was notified immediately, and men were quickly send out to recover the paper. It was clinging to tree tops and across fields in all directions. USAFSS Hq in San Antonio was notified, and an investigation was ordered. The incident was finally hushed up and it was officially declared that no compromise had occured because the men had recovered enough material to fill a burn bag. For that reason, it was determined that all the material had been recovered.
That's enough for today, so I hope there are those among you who enjoy reading about Chicksands in the early days (but after Rosetta), and I would love for some of you, particularly some who were there in the '50s. Best regards.
Ambrose Jackson

I am researching the facts behind the so-called black magic events at the old church that hit the headlines in 1963. Do any of you folks serving there then remember anything about it? What was the line on the base about the real reasons behind it? Was anyone from the base involved? I would really appreciate hearing from anyone with things to say on the subject, thanks in advance. |

Last spring, Channel 4 Time Team conducted an archaeological dig on the Priory grounds. This will be presented on the UK telly later this month. I just had notice from Chris Holtom about the program and he has promised to give Sam an update - so I don't want to steal their thunder.....but I ordered the Channel 4 books which detail all the Time Team archaeology programs for 2002 and includes 28 pages related to the Chicksands dig.
There are two books, Digging the Dirt with the Time Team (one documentary and one companion book - whateer that means.) The publication is not available on Amazon.com so I ordered directly from Channel 4 - so you can see I am not selling anything! I just want to share the information and details.
Actually I thought the books were a little pricy so I hope they will be worth the money. With shipping and handling they cost about 38 pounds sterling. I haven't gotten them yet and will write a message about them when I have received and read them. In the meantime - watch for Chris's messages about Chicksands events!! The Channel 4 website is www.channel4.com/shop/.
Best wishes to all---Cheers
Becky
