My first assignment (Chicksands 68-70) was the best of my whole Air Force career. Anyone else out there remember the kids from Briar Patch? I would give anything to hear from Erika again. I've never been able to get back to England, but I'll never forget that little 11-year old! Think I'll look into archiving this site so this data doesn't get lost if it ever goes off-line.

Chicksands has played a big part in my life and my moms. She met my dad Paul Jameson (circa 1951 motor pool I think) when she worked on base in the laundry. History repeated itself when I met my future husband Sam Compton on base. He was the one with the red Lotus 7 kit car in the early '70s. Some of you may remember my mom she played the organ in the NCO club,the Officers club and the airmans club during the early 1970's. Her name is Irene, almost 80yrs young she still plays the electronic organ and was a local celebraty on the east coast. I live in Texas now and recently visited mom across the pond. I would love to hear from anyone who remembers me or my famous mom. |

I know that NORMA BROWN was never stationed at Chicksands, but most of you old time Security Service guys and gals crossed her path.
She died the other day (Maj Gen Retired) and was buried here in San Antonio. Even us OP's guys (much less you personnel wienies) new and respected her as an enlisted guy's commander . Among others - 6940 Trng Wing at Goodfellow. Think a nice thought!!!!!!!! |

Today I visited the Museum at Chicksands and met up with Don Beets.. Don is doing a fantastic job BUT NEEDS MORE MATERIAL.. He is making the display cases as he gets no financial help. Sorting out the material he does have, and puting on computer files and much much more.
If you can help in ANY WAY Please do. Make the USAF side of the Museum a place to be proud of.

Great to find this site...have talked to a few of the guys from 1962--1964. I was on Baker Flt and worked with Sgt Miller in Easy Block and in the FLR-9 Block..also worked with Sgt Don Welch..Have contacted/emailed a few from that period...Barry Jabalon, Robert Dunbar,Fred Neubauer and Mike Hornbrook.

Reunion Headquarters Hotel: Holiday Inn North, 2301 Wagner Ford Road, Dayton, Ohio, 45414, telephone 937-278-4871. The hotel is about 10 minutes from the USAF Museum at Wright-Patterson AFB. Everyone please contact the hotel individually and make your own reservation.
Banquet dinner on Friday eve, 1 Aug, in the Holiday Inn. Speaker from the Museum invited. Dinner cost yet to be determined.
Informal outdoor BBQ Saturday eve $10.00 per person (under 5 free). (Watch this space for details).***
This reunion will be loosely structured, permitting people to renew acquaintances, and come/go as they please. We plan to organize a group tour of the Museum's Cold War Wing. The Dayton area also has quite a lot to offer visitors.

CHICKSANDS
(near Bedford, Bedfordshire)
Reunion 2000:
There was a reunion from 10-15 July 2000 for American personnel who had served at this base. Chicksands was taken over by the Americans during the War and returned to the MOD in 1995. The base is now the British National Intelligence Centre and much work has needed to be done as the Americans left the place in a bad state. The Gilbertine Priory has had £4 million spent on it to restore it to it’s former beautiful state.
Brigadier Chris Holtom (UK base commander) hosted the week. The reunion has taken two years to plan. We have asked Norman Baker MP to ask a PQ as to who paid for the week’s activities and at what cost.
On the first day Lindis ‘popped’ in as a visitor with our version of the Stars and Stripes with the words STOP STAR WARS written on it. The Chicksands Stars and Stripes was quietly lowered and our flag was attached to it before both were raised to half mast. The flags flew together for about 10 minutes before a British soldier raised them to the top of the flag pole. Lindis retrieved the ‘STOP STAR WARS’ flag and was eventually escorted out of the base. The local civil police were called but took no action.

Just got on the site and found a ton of names of which some I remember very well and some a little shady. Guess that happens after awhile. Was at Chix from Dec 80-Jun 95. 6950 DOFA/DOO/DOFC until retired in 92, then worked in the bowling center as asst manager then manager until we closed down. Looking for anyone who knows how to get ahold of Nick Haverland, Leo Renz, Don Hubert, Mary Cassidy, or anyone else who worked in Services during that time. Would love to hear from anyone really who was stationed there during that time. |

Obituary: Nobby Nowakowski
Sad to report the passing of Norbert (Nobby) Nowakowski last week at age 71. Nobby served 2 tours with the 6950th RGM 1953-55 and 1958-62. In his 2nd tour, he was on Ops B Flight. Following his USAFSS service, Nobby worked for NSA till his retirement. Condolences may be sent to his wife, Carol, at 222 Orchard Drive, Hanover PA 17731. |

To all who read:
I came to command late. I all ready had 16 years (29370) in when USAFSS nabbed me along with many others in 1962 when our recruiting tours were ending.
- We went to NSA from Apr to Jun 1962 for a Special Supervisors' Course VII.
- My first field assignment was to Peshawar Jul 62 to Jun 64.
- Went consecutive to Hawaii PacSctyRgn at Wheeler AFB.
- Then in 1965 I went to Det 2 PSR at Hickam for a stint with TRANSEC.
- Next, 1967/68 came AF Spec Com at Kelly. I was in the bldg. 125 days when I received an assignment to Karamursrel, Turkey.
- Was at Karamursel from 1968 to 1971. Went to KCDI with 3 college credits and left 3 years later with 120.
- Retired from military in 1971
- Worked for the Omaha World Herald as District Manager for Douglas and Sarpy counties while attending college.
- Graduated University Nebraska at Omaha in Dec 1972 with a BGS in Recreation Leadership.
- Accept civil service job as Youth Director at Misawa, Japan, and served Jul 1973 to Jun 1977.
- Next came Barksdale AFB, LA 1977-80
- Came to McGuire AFB NJ 1980 until I retired again in March 2002.
- I had a stint at Fort Dix as the Public Affairs Officer and Director of TRICARE Marketing at the Hospital from 1994 to 1998.
Let me digress a bit:
- My original enlistment was 2 Oct 1946 in the US Army unassigned for 18 months. I was at Kumamoto, Kyushu, Japan in 1947/48. Played on the Regimental baseball team in 1947.
- Returned to ZI in Apr 1948
- Reenlisted in the Air Force in Jul 1948 to attend Radio Operator School at Scott AFB, IL.
- Graduated Radio Scholl March 1949 and stayed on as an instructor.
- Radio school moved to Keesler AFB, MS in Aug 1949. Played baseball on the 1950 Keesler Fliers.
- Went to Keflavik, Iceland, with 1971st AACS Sq in 1954/55.
- Served at Wolters AFB, TX 1955/56, before returning to Keesler for a brief stay.
- My stay at Keesler was very brief because I went on Recruiting Duty at Red Bank, New Jersey, Jan 57 to Apr 1962.
- After my Recruiting tour ended I was "nabbed" by USAFSS.

Wesley will be 14 this month and Chelsea turn 12 this summer. As for me, Thelma and I are still happliy married and I'm now a Chief! We are now posted at Beale AFB in California. Go Kings! |

Not in Milatary.. but used to party on hard at chicksands..... from 1975 on and of till 84..
i remember Chuck the English bartender.....
I was Black girl used to hang out with the british RAF, and we used to go to the all nighter club, that later became the diner....
I remember Salco, Curry, alot of my friends married USAF Guys..... we all lost touch.
So if you allout there, can remember the parties Holla this way........ |

In August 1958 I reenlisted at Chicksands and took leave stateside. With me were two guys I knew, One was Bobby Giddens, going home after finishing his tour (I stay in contact with now). The other I don't remember but remember what we did in New York.
We looked up a buddy (a Puerto Rican I think) who had been discharged and was living in Brooklyn, or Queens or some place like that in the city. When we got to his place (actually his parents) he asked if we had walked through the streets to get there. When we said we had, he told us we had done something dangerous because of the street gangs.
Anyway, he took us to the Empire State building. He had never been there even though he had grown up in the city.
Not long after I got back to Chicksands, this guy showed up after having reelisted and having his request to be sent back to the Sands honored.
So, who was the guy that was with me on the visit, and who was the guy we visited, the guy who came back to Chicksands?
(what I do remember about him was that he was very gregarious, loved to gamble and party, expecially in the Smoke). |
