I'm interested in locating Col. William (Bill) Brandon, who was the Base Commander after Col. William H. Ernst departed. Col. Brandon was the 20th Field Maintenance Squadron Commander at Upper Heyford while I was stationed in the Aerospace Ground Equipment Branch there.
While at Chicksands I served as NCOIC of Chemical Defense Training in Disaster Preparedness, so many of you who were there from '77 to '80 may remember spending some great times with me in the mask confidence chamber. I also worked as a part-time janitor on the hill at nights and weekends.
Also, does anybody recall a poster entitled "The Porkville Porkettes?" |

Although your message was addressed to Martha, I'm taking the liberty of replying since I know the relevant facts. My father's tour of duty at Chicksands was from some time in 1951 until June of 1954. I'm not sure of his arrival date; he went over before my mother and me so he could rent a place for us (Chicksands had no on-post family housing, so we had the "misfortune" of having to live in a thatch roofed cottage built in 1597). His unit was the something-th Radio Squadron Mobile; I can't remember the number (perhaps there was only one such unit at Chicksands during the relevant period). He held the rank of Captain, USAF, during his whole tour of duty there. If I recall correctly, his principal duty was as Supply Officer for the whatever-th RSM.
Thank you so much for your kind condolences. Please do post an announcement on the e-mail list you mentioned. Also, please include him in the list for the memorial service you mentioned. I do remember the swans on the River Flit!

After a long absence, I am able to update the web site again. I have archived the 2001, 2002, and 2003 messages, which should improve the load speed for messages.
I have alphebetized the Alumni list, removing old/duplicate entries.
More work to be done (i.e. remove references to 2000 reunion, update webring, and remove CA&F info.)

I have just purchased a pewter stein that has the following engraved on the front:
N.C.O.O.M. R.A.F. Chicksands
1970
Shefford, England
The stein is an Imperial Pint, 20 oz., and has a somewhat elaborate handle, and glass bottom. There is a dimpled area above the inscription that circles the stein.
Can anyone offer some history on this item?

I knew him at DOVER AFB in DEL, & He was stationed in LONDON, with Eastcote, Typewriter repairman, USAF 11 YRS, then went to US ARMY, Became a "Warrent Officer" & went into Medical Field, now retired, with a new wife, after 44 years in the Military. (Quite a Character), Still looking for others, who were in the "Old Quanset Huts" before the NICE BARRACKS on the Hill, 7534th USAF Dispensary, Jun 65-Jan 67, I learned to dance the "Quick Step" ,in Bedford, and I enjoyed my stay in England, I have a "Gwin Family History Book" & the "GWIN'S Came from Llanwrst, Wales, near Bangor, & Were the "Ruling Class" at one time, and lost to the "SOUTH" & Here, in the USA we lived in the SOUTH, I was at 631 S 72nd St, B'Ham, Alabama as a Youth, and lost to the "NORTH" Now I'm in OKLAHOMA, & Everyone wants to "BEAT US", Hard to get on a winning team! 1978-1980: Remembering one of the best times of my life…being young and foolish with friends at RAF Chickands, the Rod & Gun Club (the R&G), LGMT, Charlie Flight, “Rock Sampler” and yelling “S…e…g…e…r” (Bob Seger’s Old Time Rock and Roll) when I entered the NOC club. Susan, You were born while your mother was staying with us in Luton. You mother called you Ann, and we were with her as she gave you up for adoption, which I believe ti was in May or June 1959, a few months shortly after you were born in April 1959. I knew Joe Parks, who played football for me at Chicksands in 1958. I was his coach. He actually rotated to the States for discharge in 1959 just before you were born. Hello alumni of R.A.F Chicksands. It has been quite some time since my first post which was in November of '97. I was 15 at the time and posted a inquiry of my father Wayne G. Foster who was stationed at Chicksands I believe from '88-'91 as a cryptologist. I am looking for information of any sort about his death. I also have some general questions about his life while he was there. I apologize for the bluntness and saddening post but I feel closure is way past due.
I hope all who are reading this, can understand that I was a young child at the time about 8. I now have many unanswered questions about the passing of my father and would like to speak to people who new him or our family.
When I first posted in '97 I had some very informitive replies from some incredibly nice individuals. Thank you to all!!! I have lost touch of these people and would like to get into contact with them once again. I also would encourage anyone who I have not talked to please email me. I would greatly appreciate it.
I thank you all who have served in the Air Force. You are the ones who make the United States the greatest nation. Maybe you feel your service goes unnoticed, but it doesnt. I will continue to keep our nation, service men/women and President in prayer. Thank you for reading my post. God Bless

I haven't been on this site for a while. I was at Chicksands from Dec 81 - Dec 83. Dawg flight SE04/06 202 then day weenie in 1983. Lived on the third floor of 'fox' dorm.
My roommate and I (Dave LaFleur) got a letter of reprimand for having the most incredibly trashed room when the commander came through on a suprise inspection. Our flight commander asked us if our room really looked like that when we left it that morning. So much for mid-day break parties! Boy, what a surprise it was to walk down the hill back to the dorm and find the Sq commander, the flight commander, S&W sup (Jim Flynn), the first sgt, & the mission supervisor all trying not to step on our stuff while waiting for us to get back to the room. lol. Not many people know about that one (until now anyway). I can't tell you how many pranks and esapades I was involved in back then! (Oh, and some of my accomplices... Jeff Nichols, Dave Comstock, Dave LaFleur, Bob Mock, Jim (Chris) Miller, Radar Thompson, Rick Herriage) ....
I'm going to see if I can attend the 2005 reunion, but will have to see how the year ends. If anyone remembers me, send me an email, I'd love to hear from you... nevada7@sbcglobal.net

I was a 29251 on Baker Flight in E (Easy) Block before we moved to the hill. Went 2T to Taiwan October 1964 with Fred York, Al North And DeFazio.

My Grandmother worked on the base between 57/63 She was known as MISS GENNY. She is now 91 and nearly blind, but has many fond memories of her 'poor dear boys' and her time running the snack bar on the site and working in the NCOs and airmans club. I was stationed at Chix along with a bunch of people when the 6910th in Augsburg closed in 1974. I was a dit chaser until I got to Chix. I worked in the 6950th Security Squadron Orderly Room until my rotation back to CONUS in November 1975. I am trying to find any information on the people who lived next door to me in Barton-le-Clay, above a fish & chips shop. Their first names were Rick and Deb. He was a cook and she worked in personel. They drove a kind of pumpkin colored Mini. If nothing else, could anyone supply a last name? It's been almost 30 years and the memory isn't what it used to be. |

Just discovered this site, 2/20/04. I was stationed Chixsands from May/60 to May/63. Worked in K block. I am interested in contacting former barracks mates, Paul Petenbrink, William Rowley, and Melvin Smith. Also would like to know where abouts of Thomas Kindig, and Thomas Alms. Wow!. I logged in here and scanned such a long list of postings. It was a real pleasure to see notes from many old friends but at the same time it was so sad to note the passing of some others. Two weeks ago, Bernice and I gave up the hustle bustle of the DC area and retired for good in Sylvester, GA. Would be nice to hear from any old Chix friends out there. (1966-69, 1971-75, and 1978-81). |

Can I make a further appeal for details from anyone who has had a "ghostly" encounter at Chicksands. It is known that there is more than one ghost within the monastic walls and on the estate. Such is the interest in ghosts of Bedfordshire that it seems prudent to tell a wider audience of other experiences than the well known legend of Rosata. thank you. |

This is an appeal for photographs of Chicksands Priory (inside or out) and of the gardens around the building. Stone artifacts which were there 1950-70s were damaged or destroyed. We now have details of the items concerned and if photographs can be obtained it is possible that replicas can be made and restored in situ by the Friends of Chicksands Priory. Also, having made contact with Paul Lejoie, it would be wonderful to hear from his two co-writers of the 1958 booklet, Legend and Lore, August Trottman and Richard Luderus. Any news of these two gentlemen would be greatly appreciated.
If you are visiting England please contact us. We would not want any former resident of Chicksands to miss seeing the restored Priory. We are open by appointment, April - October on the 1st & 3rd Sundays of the month. Lastly, I would be grateful to hear from Arnold Sutcliffe regarding his photographs of the 'monk and Rosata.' o) |

Hi,
I am sorry to bother you, i am trying to locate my father who served as a staff sergeant in the USAF at RAF Chicksands in England in 1970, his name was James Ronald Hill, he may have been in 2167th Comm. Sq, i noticed the RAF Chicksands web site on the internet search engine hoping to maybe get a clue to his whereabouts. Only details i have is that he returned to the states in 1971, some say he went back to his home town of Nashville after leaving the USAF, i dont really know. As you will notice, my dad named me after him.
If you have any recollection or photos of him then please contact me, i think he had something to do with communications, my mother recalls him saying that he was a listener (operator) something like that.
If you can contact any of your old buddys, to see if they can recall a Staff Sergeant by the name of James R Hill.
I would appreciate any help and any information would be really helpful.
