Just an ask for help, if anyone has it: The San Vito website
has a member ("Boy Lloyd") who is in search of the French Onion Soup recipe
from the Hare and Hound in Biggleswade. Apparently the pub owner would pass
the recipe to people PCSing, but this guy never got his copy. Does anyone
who is a member HAVE the recipe and would you be willing to pass it on?
I would post it on the San Vito website and in turn if there's any recipes
I can research for any of you, just let me know. (Even if you don't have
the French onion soup recipe, just let me know if you have something you
would like & I will post it back here) My email is karenisakblixen@yahoo.com
and yes I visted and revisted RAF Chicksands and the area many times (I
knew Kent Bridges, Don Maatta, and some other of your compatriots via tech
training and/or San Vito). Although I had Chix atop my dream sheet, they
kept sending me back to Vito and the Middle East. I did have a pub lunch
at the Hare & Hound, but I don't think I had the soup as it was summer and
pretty unseasonably hot when I was there. Thanks alot for any assistance,

Early winter 1954 -- I was new to Chicksands and living in
one of the 14 man barracks. I decided to get out of the barracks and go
into the town of Bedford after work and evening chow. I slipped on some
civies and a jacket and started the walk up to Sandy Lane. Soon wished I
had a hat as the damp chill was being felt. Why, oh why, did it have to
get dark so early in the day. I had heard about catching the bus at the
end of the Lane so down the gradual grade I started walking. It was getting
very dark but I could see and be guided by the lights at the farm house
half-way down the Lane. But soon it was a short walk up a hill and I was
in complete, pitch-black darkness. I had been told of the forest on either
side of the Lane but nothing could be seen on this moonless vening. With
nothing to guide me but the feel of gravel at the edge of the Lane under
my feet, I walked slowly on. I could only hope there were no wild animals
living in the forest. I heard a sound and froze in my tracks - something
was out there. I was shocked but yet relieved when another single airman
almost walked right into me heading for the base. How pleased I was to finally
reach the highway, flag down the next bus, and to see lights and other humans.
Yet dreading the thought that after my town adventure I had to retrace my
steps and take once again that long and scarey walk through the woods to
reach the base. I did resolve to get down to the P. X. to purchase a torch
(flashlight) for any future attempts to walk Sandy Lane. |

Hello, just happened to come up on this website. Wow, I'm
seeing alot of friends up here. My dad was stationed here from 1990-94.
I am looking for anyone who might remember me. I went to middle school here
and my freshman year up at Alconbury. I see Anita Kelley was trying to get
ahold of me back in 2001. HEY GIRL, man did we loss touch along time ago.
Didn't know what happened to ya. I see the last message you wrote was back
in 2002. I hope you still come here once in awhile. If anyone knows how
to get ahold of Anita, please let me know. Also, if anyone knows how to
get ahold of a Nori Atkins, please email me. I was just in England back
in January visiting my grandparents and was able to get on Chicksands to
show my husband around. Wow, it's been 10 years since I've been there and
all the memories came rushing at me. I loved it. I miss that place. Well,
take it easy everyone, I hope someone remembers me and drops me a line sometime.

Hello all! In case you haven't heard through the grapevine,
through the message boards at www.chicksands.com or www.videoranch.net/chicksands,
then here it is: We (Ed S. and Ed E.) are coordinating a Reunion for all
Chicksands alumni, not just Cops, for St. Patricks's Day, 2007 in Ireland.
Sir Edmond Scannell has been kind enough to assist in the process and fasciliate
some key elements such as lodging, etc. Not to mention he is the chief expert
on Ireland so he will be providing some invaluable directions for places
to party! If you are interested, all you military pukes (welfare cases)
should put in for your leave now and start begging, as well as lining up
for stand-by flights! For those of us with real ives and jobs, we simply
take vacation and book our flights. Ed has come up with some great ideas.
For one, the possibility of opening up a bank account so that we can all
contribute to it now and have a pool of money for flights, lodging, Guinness
money, etc. Please let us know if you would be interested in contributing
to this as well. Keep in touch and we'll keep you posted. --Eddie |

I enjoyed 9 Fetes at Chicksands and my most memorable 4th

a fly over. I watched it all from the River Flit. |

On this July 4th of 2005 my memories take me back to RAF
Chicksands and July of 1966. I recall living across the street from the
parking lot where all the July 4th Fete festivities were set up. I lived
in Baker Dorm and rarely got a decent nights sleep whilst the noise and
music of the fete blared onward. I must admit, some 39 years later, that
my time at Chicksands was a memorable one, including all the nose from the
Fete. As Americans celebrate 229 years of Independence from King George
III, and British influence, we remember those in battle and in harms way
in Iraq and Afghanistan, fighting the war against terrorism. Both British
and American troops . America may not be without fault, but with all our
faults, America and those who have served her over the past two and a quater
centuries take pride in uttering the words sacred to Americans, Duty, Honor,
Country. Perhaps those who had the privledge to have served at RAF Chicksands
in Bedfordshire will join me in saying, Happy Birthday America! Vince Wuwert

I thought I would like everyone that used Gordons/Shefford
taxis to know that Gordon is not in very good shape. He had a couple of
stokes, lost part use of his right arm. apart from that he is OK He and
Olive moved out to Norfolk, quite close to the coast Of course he misses
the taxi work, starting first with Frank Turner @ Silver Knight Taxi's then
starting up on his own He often talks of the good times, the bad times and
the laughs. The Friends he made from the base, albeit short. |

Please visit www.chicksands.org to read Ambrose Jackson's
account of life at RAF Chicksands in the early days. A photo of Ambrose
(Jack) is posted there to prove he wrote the article....I don't know for

facility and taking a self photo - could the photo posted be that same one?....hum...I
wonder. Judge for yourself. Reunion plans are still being formulated - we
hope to have some major reunion announcements for publishing by April 5.
There have been 2999 visits to the website since Bill set it up. That's
pretty impressive. Best to all....hope to see you there in 139 days. Sincerely,

TIME MARCHES ON For so many Chicksands veterans and dependents,
their time spent there is a very special part of the span of years they
have been allotted. Even though perhaps unrealized during a youthful tour
featuring fun pursuits that overshadowed military duty, service at Chicksands
is now remembered as an important contribution to the US and its allies
and being on the Chicksands team in whatever role is a source of justifiable
pride. For almost ten years, former Chicks have gathered at reunions, written
books, painted pictures, and posted website notes affirming the affection
held for our former base and her extended family, now widely scattered over
time and space. For so many, going back to Chicksands is important; a need
to be fulfilled. Our veterans group has been very fortunate, indeed, especially
since the USAF withdrawal, to have been befriended and welcomed by generous
hosts who worked closely with some among us who planned and coordinated
reunions and individual visits. But time marches swiftly on and nothing
should be forever taken for granted. The planning of a reunion by foreigners
at a military base perpetually at a high Defence Condition takes delicate
nurturing and considerable work. Many Chicksands veterans are approaching
hourglass milestones beyond which the ability to travel abroad is not assured.
Neither can we assume an unbroken string of hosts willing to put up with
us, advocates able to spend time opening doors for us, or coordinators among
us known to our hosts and able and willing to pull so many bits together.
The end of July fast approaches. If Chicksands is a special place in your
heart and you'd like to revisit, join us this time round. A "next time"
isn't guaranteed! |

October 2004 my family and I got stationed back in merry
ole England again. This time we've found an even smaller base than Chicksands,
called RAF Croughton. Went by Chicksands to see the base and notice they
had removed the Flair-9 antenna. How sad, not to see my old friend as we
approached. The British RAF guards were nice to let us in, but told us not
to take any photos. They said in the Spring we could take the tour of the
Priory and take all the photos we wanted. |

Fellow Chicks: let's meet for a drink at the Green Man in
Stanford the evening of July 29th. To kick-off the reception for what will
be an important and memorable reunion back at our favourite base, I will
buy the first drink for each reunion attendee (all services, dependents,
civilians). You need to be there as we rededicate the Lest We Forget Memorial,
including in thoughts and prayers our UK/US troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
We will be raising new US and POW/MIA flags that you will want to hold for
a few moments beforehand. You need to be there as we rededicate the US Room
of the Intelligence Museum and turn over newly-collected artificts of the
US era at Chicksands. You need to be there to help plant a memorial tree
in the Priory's Walled Garden. You mustn't miss the opportunity to join
a special dinner in the Priory or the fun outdoor BBQ we are planning. Sign
up ASAP; I'll see you at the bar of the Green Man! Bill |

Happy New Year Everybody! "Homes For Our Troops,(HFOT)" funds
the modification of dwellings for US troops disabled in Iraq and Afghanistan
to make them accessible and livable. Structural modifications permit badly
wounded, disabled troops to leave hospitals and live at home with less on-scene
assistance. HFOT is a badly-needed program managed with trustworthy oversight.
During January-February 05, you can have a free copy of the Chicksands history
book for just the cost of postage/handling: $2.46 each without further obligation
(US and APO addresses only). For those who wish to contribute, 100% of any
amount added will be donated directly to HFOT. Send checks to SheffordPress,
PO Box 4053, Crofton MD 21114. Write "HFOT" on the check's "for" line. Many
