I was the only female firefighter on RAF Chicksands from 81-83, a short but sweet time. I ran 10 k's and a 1/2 marathon, I swam at RAF Henlow quite a bit and if I was'nt doing that I rode my bike or Rode My friends (David Smith's motorcycle to Cambridge quite a bit, I was also on the Women's Softball team. I fondly remember My friend Will Athow( civilian Driver at the Fire Dept). Leeds (the Chaplin),and a Catholic priest from Milwaukee, whos name escapes me.
I also remember Bill and Lanie. Anyone out there that remembers me,, give me a hollar. I now live in California, Also Last but the coolest Dude on base was My Assistant Chief Robert (SKATE) Thomas, who I know lives in Sacramento but lost his info.
Anybody out there???????????

The site has been in operation since 1996. I would hate to let mindless spambots shut the doors on the message board. I have received a few suggestions on how to fix including:
Member only access, where only those people with valid e-mail addresses get posted, and to change the message board to a moderated site, where your post would go into a holding bucket until I approve or disapprove for posting.
I will need to learn how to do either of these, or get somebody elses code, so please bear with me. This is not a funded site, I get nothing more than the satisfaction of keeping members in touch, nor am I a web designer. The site started as a hobby, and I just keep paying for the domain and web hosting service (Unix server). I work full time (60 hours a week with my daily commute) and spend as much available time as I can with my kids when not working. Please don't give up on the site yet. |

I was a young kid at RAF Chicksands, and went to 1st through
5th grade there. Approx 1972 - 1978. I Googled some things and now the memories
are flooding back to me & here I am. It was one of the best periods of my
life, living on base. Walking and riding bikes to school was so much fun.
My teachers were so nice. I remember a Mrs. Henderson - she had a flair
for art and was so supportive of art ability in young children. The teachers
I had, read to us after lunch, and throughout school there, I was read things
like Pipi Longstocking, The Hobbit, and possibly Lord of the Rings, maybe
the first one? That was so great. I lived off base at first, and I remember
the school buses - there were only 4 1/2 I think - 4 full sized, reddish
purple-striped, nice coaches, with crimson/yellow/orange highlited purple
upholstery that always made you feel warm, and 1 small bus for the farthest
nieghborhoods and events. The playground of the Elementary school was amazing
- at least 2 football fields big I think. Rolling hills, swings, rope ladders,
a tall slide that must have been 50 feet at the top-no kidding-with a little
hut on top and the slide was polished shiny and slippery from all the use
it got,... see-saws - we had see-saws! a pair of 2, and tether ball, we
had tether ball. I am so glad I experienced these things - I have only seen
similair on old TV shows like "Leave it to Beaver"...and all sorts of space,
trees, ample grass everywhere...it was fantastic. The Blizzard of '79 was
amazing, playing in the deep snow banks in front of the Priory. Going home
for lunch, crossing from "Old Base" to "New Base" and back, on that little
bridge, was such a treat. I lived on "New Base", across the street from
the Hill. We had a tree fort overlooking the top of the Hill, right up next
to the fence - it was a huge hollowed out limb of a tree - hollowed out
by my friends dog - it took 2 years! and one right at the bottom, at the
bottom where that group of trees next to the little path that wound all
the way to the top and people would walk to work. We would sometimes dare
each other to ride our BMX bikes down that path, but never did. I was in
the Cub Scouts, and went on to Boy Scouts there...once the whole troop was
taken to the base theater to see "Thank God its Friday" and the next morning,
all we could eat in the Mess Hall. I used to see Matinees of Buck Rogers
in the base Theater. I actually was in a Christmas play on the stage in
that theater. I first borrowed Kiss' "God of Thunder" from the library.
My parents hated that...I went to a dance once in the Priory. I was there
on the birthday of some of the strange events in history that happened at
the Priory, people were gathered all around it, and we camped out, kids
and adults, and at midnight went out looking for Rosetta's ghost (? right?
something like that...), playing soccar with a head, near the river. We
used to watch the football games and not stop eating hamburgers and hot
dogs, ... once, on the field, after one of the last games, we found a box
of team commemorative watches that were lost before the ceremony to close
out the season. One summer they brought a hot rod show onto the field and
park, my first hot rod show ever. The movie theater - the whole place always
stood during the National Anthem, and years later in my first time at a
civilain theater, I stood up at the moment I thought the break to the Anthem
was coming...what a shock when they didnt do it... I saw so many great movies
there, some with my parents and some without...Convoy, Superman, The Bad
News Bears (remember crying to go see that)Smoky & the Bandit, Young Frankenstein,
The Rescuers - the summer of the Rescuers animated film, there was a yearly
air show happening. Inside the theater we could hear thejets and bombers
overhead. At one point they asked people to come out and see, ...it was
a rare view of a flying mighty Vulcan bomber jet, they did a hang manuver,
where the jet was pointing up, and it seemed to hang there before diving
on its way. It was so big I felt, that in the late afternoon sun it darkened
the sky and blocked out the sun for that moment, and I could actually see
all the detail lines running across the airframe, before it took off with
a huge roar of its engines...it was stunning.... Well I was moving air conditioners
yesterday, and happened to remember my best friends on Chicksands, the Borja
brothers, they were from Guam. Their father suffered a heart atack one summer
afternoon, because he was moving air conditioners from their storage to
the rooms where they wanted them, and his wife was telling him to take a
load off. He passed away that evening, and I was sleeping over their house
that night, and I was there when their mother came home, crying, that their
father was gone. Wherever the Borja family may be, I just want to say that
I was never treated so great by anyone, and we had such good times together.
I'll never forget, they had a cool Nova, metalflake green, with Cragar mag
wheels and a CB radio - we had so much fun in that hot rod, we all would
talk to each other on CB radios... As far as I know they went back to Guam
after, to take care of things and visit their relatives. I just wanted to
write this out and post it when I saw this web site. Thanks for reading.
Take care. Boston, MA. 6/16/2006 |

There are bots out there that latch onto unrestricted bulleting
boards and forums and it has gotten very bad lately (for all unrestricted
forums). I had to change my business forum to confirm email addressed and
passwords to stop the spam posts and I still get about 4-5 attempts each
day to post porn links, etc. Whoever is monitoring this site, if you have
the option to require email verification without requirin password access,
at least it would only allow those with verified email addresses to post.
The ones that abuse it, you can reverse their IP address and send an abuse
report to their ISP provider (provided they aren't out of the country).

An incident that happened to me at the Sands that often amuses
me now, took place one day when I was assigned to collect the traffic from
ours and other blocks and deliver it, probably to the 202 section. I had
just stepped out of our block with the briefcase of traffic and heard a
sound of a low flying jet. I looked up and there was a Russian Jet low enough
that I could see the Red Stars on it. In some sort of attempt to seek safety
from what I guess that I thought was WW3 I dived onto the ground tight against
the bottom of the block. Of course, nothing else happened, and some time
later I learned that the jet was going to land at London. On board was some
Russian Leader going to a Summit Meeting. To the best of my knowledge this
is the first time that I have revealed my heroic action that day. Len. |

I would recommend the monitors erase the previous message
from the crooked Nigerian Oil scam. Just about everyone in the world know
that this is a fraud, and most likely criminal. Having it on a board dedicated
to USAF Intelligence Services personnel does not really set the right tone.
And for those that aren't familar with the Nigerian scam, my advice would
be to immediately disregard. It is a charade to scam money off of you. |

the man--it sounds like you would have the info that I desire. I was there
3/7/55 and of course would have been given a copy of those orders. After
my return to the land of the big px I was staying at my wifes home in Philadelphia,
Ms and stored my duffel bags, uniforms and all in their home. Shortly after,
the house and all my stuff was destroyed. Idiotic though it may sound that
was one big reason I failed to re-up. Didn't want to pay for all those togs
again. I know this may be impossible but is there any way that I can secure
a copy of the orders that delt with my part, I have no idea where else to
look. I am typing this memo 6 years after your msg and still I hope that
you might answer me. Thanks and since tis the season, Happy Easter and Cheers
everyone. Leonard Hartmann |

Mary, I was there at the same time as John and Church. Sgt.
Bundy was our trick Sgt. Joe Chambliss, Alvin Gallegos,Leonard Higgenbotham,
Blackmon and many others were all there. In the last several days I have
spent quite a lot of time delving into my memory about those years. It almost
seems that I should be able to reach out and touch them. Every time that
I think of Bedford or The White Hart in Shefford I get thirsty. Believe
it or not I was one of the Yanks that acquired a taste for the English beer
and the way that it was served. A lot of people have kidded me about it
over the years. I well remember how many bottles of Jack D. that Joe Chambliss
and I found the bottom of. I believe that it was $3.00 at the time. We had
some real serious parties at the time but we never got into any trouble--I
don't know how... Well, enough of the good old days--they were good too--We
just didn't realize it at the time. Best regards and hope that I haven't
bored you too badly. Leonard Hartmann leonard414@nctc.com |

Bob, I was at the Sands from Jan of 1957 to Jan 57. I do
know that some of my old group of friends are gone--Birdwell, Church, Sgt.
Bundy, My best friend--Joe Chambliss. Often I wonder about some of the others
like Mack Murdock, Alvin Gallegos, Reg. Stevens and his wife Beryl. I had
a close friend in Hitchin, a Mrs. St Clair who had an antique shop on Bridge
St. Also, I've never had as good a fish & chips as we used to get there
in Shefford. Oh well, enough memories for now. my wife is watching baseball
in the livingroom and it must be quite a game judging from all the noise
that she is making. Leonard Hartmann leonard414@nctc.com |

Willard, Yes, I remember Sgt Veasey very well and he often
comes to mind. Correct me if I'm wrong (I hope that I am) wasn't he killed
in a plane crash in about November of 1957? Often I wonder about the CO
that we had in early 54, wasn't his name Lt. Col. Doakes? I had to see him
about a family matter during that Spring and he was a truly fine Officer.
I heard of him a number of years ago on Christmas Eve. He came on the air
from flight duty on the Dew Line and reported that a sleigh shaped object
had been picked up on the system and was headed toward the lower 48. Seems
to me that he was then a General. Heaven knows, he had plenty of time to
get to that rank. I left the Sands at least half a lifetime ago. Leomard

Just an ask for help, if anyone has it: The San Vito website
has a member ("Boy Lloyd") who is in search of the French Onion Soup recipe
from the Hare and Hound in Biggleswade. Apparently the pub owner would pass
the recipe to people PCSing, but this guy never got his copy. Does anyone
who is a member HAVE the recipe and would you be willing to pass it on?
I would post it on the San Vito website and in turn if there's any recipes
I can research for any of you, just let me know. (Even if you don't have
the French onion soup recipe, just let me know if you have something you
would like & I will post it back here) My email is karenisakblixen@yahoo.com
and yes I visted and revisted RAF Chicksands and the area many times (I
knew Kent Bridges, Don Maatta, and some other of your compatriots via tech
training and/or San Vito). Although I had Chix atop my dream sheet, they
kept sending me back to Vito and the Middle East. I did have a pub lunch
at the Hare & Hound, but I don't think I had the soup as it was summer and
pretty unseasonably hot when I was there. Thanks alot for any assistance,

Early winter 1954 -- I was new to Chicksands and living in
one of the 14 man barracks. I decided to get out of the barracks and go
into the town of Bedford after work and evening chow. I slipped on some
civies and a jacket and started the walk up to Sandy Lane. Soon wished I
had a hat as the damp chill was being felt. Why, oh why, did it have to
get dark so early in the day. I had heard about catching the bus at the
end of the Lane so down the gradual grade I started walking. It was getting
very dark but I could see and be guided by the lights at the farm house
half-way down the Lane. But soon it was a short walk up a hill and I was
in complete, pitch-black darkness. I had been told of the forest on either
side of the Lane but nothing could be seen on this moonless vening. With
nothing to guide me but the feel of gravel at the edge of the Lane under
my feet, I walked slowly on. I could only hope there were no wild animals
living in the forest. I heard a sound and froze in my tracks - something
was out there. I was shocked but yet relieved when another single airman
almost walked right into me heading for the base. How pleased I was to finally
reach the highway, flag down the next bus, and to see lights and other humans.
Yet dreading the thought that after my town adventure I had to retrace my
steps and take once again that long and scarey walk through the woods to
reach the base. I did resolve to get down to the P. X. to purchase a torch
(flashlight) for any future attempts to walk Sandy Lane. |
