Rebecca Fahey faheyrg@yahoo.com Thu Feb 11 08:00:49 2010 So happy to find this site is open for messages. It has been the most consistent message board for Chicksands alumni for many years....thanks Zan for your hard work and efforts to keep us keeping in touch! I was stationed at Chicksands from 76-79 and worked in the Transportation Squadron for Bill Hobbs. I also worked part time at the commissary as a grocery bagger. I took college classes on base and lived in Shefford. I drove a green mini with a red door and later a red vw bug. My girl friends from the base were Elaine Miller, Judy Myers, Jan Caputo and Kathy Look. It was a great assignment. I am fortunate to visit England about once a year and generally go to Chicksands to visit the Priory or attend a reunion. It has changed but still looks very much like it did in the 70s. The old chapel is gone and of course the antenna is too but the Priory is still as beautiful as ever. Thanks again Zan for maintaining this site. Sincerely, Becky Fahey

Michael Johnson breadman4@verizon.net Sun Jan 17 11:28:03 2010 Bringing back memories looking at the photos of Chix. I was a 202 in the 50th stationed there twice - July 81 to Jul 85, and again from May 91 to Oct 92, both times on Baker Flt. I remember being told before I got there that it doesn't snow much, only to have the worst storm in 30 years that first winter there. Baker Flt was on a ski trip in the Cairngorm's in Scotland and got out just 30 minutes before they closed the roads. My wife, Betsy, two kids, Steve and Jenny, and I really enjoyed it there. I was by myself the second time, but still had a great time there. Someday, hope to make it back to see the area and have a few pints. Cheers, Michael Kent Island, Maryland

Alvin K. Ashcraft ashcraftak@gmail.com Sun Dec 20 15:30:31 2009 I celebrated Christmas of 1966 at RAF Chicksands and if memory serves, as a X1 on Charlie trick, we spent much of the Holiday at work on "The Hill." MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR to those who have served and those who are serving. GO HOGS!!!
Penelope McCroddan penelopem@btconnect.com Sun Dec 20 09:04:21 2009 Message for Commanding Officer, RAF Chicksands. On Thursday 17th December we became stranded in blizzard conditions on the A507 between Baldock & Cottered in Herts. A group of personel from RAF Chicksands pushed us and several other vehicles up quite a steep hill and thus got us out of trouble and, in fact, caught up with us later and extracated us again from a similar situation further along the road. In total a journey of about 4 miles took us well over three hours. Had it not been for the help we recveived from the group from Chicksands we would probably have had to spend the night in the car. We were extremely impressed by their organisational skills and team-work as well as the cheerful way they tackled the problem. We do hope that they eventually managed to find a comfortable place to spend the night. We would like you to pass on our sincere thanks to all of them - they were a credit to the service. Regards Penelope McCroddan
James Gambino jvgambino@hotmail.com Sat Dec 19 23:44:15 2009 Holiday greetings to all....To all I know have a great holiday season..To those I have never met, May our roads meet and may we enjoy each others company.
Don Kalil donaldkalil at aol dot com Wed Dec 16 15:18:11 2009 It's coming upon the Christmas Holidays and I just wanted to say Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to fellow Chixer's. I was on the hill as an X1 from 74-76. Spent about 6 months at the 6910th in Augsburg 73/74 before heading to the Sands. Great times and great people at both units!
Ned Crimmin khabt114@att.net Sun Dec 13 18:50:52 2009 I forgot to mention that along with Gene Vajgrt I co-owned the 1956 RED two Door post Chevy, with the loud pipes. Loved that ride until I could no longer fix her in the Auto Hobby quanset hut. Parts for American cars were hard to come by during my stay. Gene co-owned it with the Judo Instructor that he and I took Judo from at the base Gym. Gene and I both worked at the base theater during our off duty times with Gale Keys. The one site I will always remember is the burning of the farm lields from the roof of the Theater. Gale Keys and myself ran after a fox hunt, going over hill and over dale. When we got tired, we walked back down the upper gate road. I heard the hounds, got my 8 mm running and got movies of the fox running across the road that intersected the road we were on. Fun to say the least. Good ole' days are still remembered. I still talk to Roy Golder and Valerie Beckum formerly of Haynes, and my son Keith of Sheringham, Norfolk. As I has said to others, I could not have had a better first assignment from 1964-68 than the Sands. Like being put in a time machine being on that base and wandering around the Priory and catacombs to the boat house. Merry Christmas to all if I do not get back on site for a bit. Ned
Mike Reynolds bestbuy9999@yahoo.com Sat Dec 12 04:33:57 2009 I was at Chicksands from 1968 through 1971, and was known mainly by the nickname "Stokes". The best time I had on the base was playing in a rock band on base with John Cole, "OD" Ordonez, Dave Armentrout, and other music lovers. Off-base, the teachers' college in Bedford was my home away from home and the place of most of my fondest memories. I ate in the college cafeteria, slept in the dorms once in a while, went to all the dances, and pretty much did everything except go to the classes. I drove a little red MG midget with an optional hardtop for a year or so until an unfortunate accident on the way to the college one day. I played on the base volleyball team which won the tournament against the other American bases in England, and then went to Germany for the European bases tournament (lost!). If any of the guys I used to hang with read this, drop me a line. Especially Al Bartosik and Russ Chevalier who were my first roommates, and who I drove completely crazy.
Ned Crimmin khabt114@att.net Sat Dec 12 02:00:04 2009 At the Sands from 64 - 68. Still trying to find some of those that made those years memorable. Looking for Gene Vajgrt, Bonnie Miller, Kathy Buttery, Danny Buttery, Gale Keys, Bill Bidell, Bill Dowdy, Warren Sleeter, Jim Skalski, Leon Rhoder, Gibson, Darrel Smith (Smitty)was fast pitch softball pitcher, Joe Brown, and others. For a first assignment the Sands was like a Fantasy World. Many fond memories. Got a lot of photos of the Sands, Henlow, London, etc. on North of Watford site on Yahoo. Check them out. Best to all, Ned
Chet Gulczynski chet4404@hotmail.com Mon Dec 7 17:40:29 2009 Just came across this site. I was at Chicks for just 3 months; Jan-Mar 1962, then transferred to San Vito. I was Russian 203 (don't remember which flight) and worked for a SSgt Donald Healy with guys named Kerns, Thoms and Sands. Lived in one of the SECO huts for a few weeks when I first got there; guys I remember were Stu Broom, John Newell and a guy named Hubert Prince, who was a meatcutter (which is what we called him, of course!) at the base commissary. We once chipped in to have Prince bring us steaks which we cooked on one of the oil stoves in the hut! Stu Broom took me on my first trip to Bedford on the bus. He told me to give the conductor a 1 pound note and study the resulting pile of change to learn the money. Later, got a room in the dorm with guys named Michonski, Foreman and another guy. Other guys I knew there were "Fitz" Fitzpatrick, Melvin Smith and Carl Lutes, who were all in my Russian class at Indiana 10/60 - 7/61. Anyone that knew me or was there at same time, please shoot me an e-mail. Chet

Dave Shortt d92567@yahoo.com Wed Nov 18 03:22:09 2009 Hello all :) The holidays are coming around and I am just reminiscing about some of the good ole memories I had of my assignment in Chicksands. Roxanna Lake - you were the best boss I could have had at the time and and such sunny personality. Did ya ever make it to Germany, or wherever in Europe ya wanted to go? Laura Corona - as my supervisor you were better than I deserved. Thanks! To Dave Wood and rest of the folks at Alconbury Data Automation - LOL did we give each other grief. How did we ever get along, hehe!? Dave, we had an awesome, AWESOME trip to switzerland! Elizabeth Nitzenberger - are ya still running those miles away!? Bill Bryant w048@centurytel.net Mon Nov 2 17:07:11 2009 The 11th annual 50's Chix reunion came off smoothly Oct. 20-23, this year, in Montgomery AL. Sixty-four Chicksandsers and spousi attended and enjoyed a great dose of down-home, southern hospitality, including a tour of Maxwell-Gunter AFB and a stellar briefing on today's USAFSS activities, which are awe inspiring. If you were stationed at Chicksands between 1950 and 1960, any trick, straight days, any AFRS, and want particulars on next year's 12th annual reunion in Branson, MO, contact Joe and Barbara Rose (56-60) at jwrose5@aol.com. Wayne (Waco) Wetterman waynew511@aol.com Sun Aug 23 10:49:34 2009 Yeah Jabs, in fact I was pulling C.Q. duty the night he signed in. As you remember, we issued ration cards to the new arrivals at that time. Not knowing that one had to be over 21 to become an officer, I actually asked him for his I.D. before I issued him his Likker Ration Card. Although he probably should have chewed my butt, he was (as always) a gentleman about the entire incident. ww
Barry "Jabs" Jablon bjablon@verizon.net Sat Aug 22 12:09:54 2009 Hey Waco, I don't remember if you were still at the "Sands" when a very young Lt. Wolf came to work. I remember, because of his age being so close to the rest of us, we kind of buddied around with him and took him on his first trip to London. Also, if I recall correctly, he got into some troublel because he was hanging around too much with the enlisted guys. Boy he certainly did well for himself.
Simon Dunham simon@rsscashregisters.co.uk Thu Aug 20 17:13:33 2009 I am looking for Tom Bealle, he was president of the Chicksands Officers Association back in 1984. I had a great time & was wondering if anyone knows where Tom & his gang are now?

Pat Holena patholena@msn.com Sat May 16 07:00:49 2009 It has been a long time since I checked this site since it was being spammed so bad a few years ago and pretty much shut down. Glad to see it up and running. This brings back so many memories. It was my first assignment in the Air Force and it set me up for a very long career. Unfortunately working in the Clinic did not allow me to network as much as the hill dwellers but I did run into many of you that were lucky enough to find your way to Elemendorf. I got to know a lot of you because I was the only person on base in my AFSC working in the Eye Clinic.

Bill Bryant w048@centurytel.net Sun Mar 22 00:12:54 2009 A reminder that the 2009, 50s Chix Reunion will convene on Tuesday, Oct. 20, through Friday, Oct. 23, in Montgomery, AL. When they're finalized, I'll publish them to your e-mail and our reunion group site. If you've never been to a 50s reunion, you've missed recognizing some old (boy, do I mean old) faces, hearing some great tales, demi-lies, myths that have since grown into legends, good food and a special kind of camaraderie that isn't quite found anywhere else except among those who were fortunate enough to serve at the biggest little base in the UK...make that, in the USAFE.
